Impeach the system!

There is growing momentum in the US Congress to impeach the President. Lawmakers would do better to impeach the system before it allows another figure like Trump to gain absolute power.

Menawhile, 140 of the 535 members of the US Congress are said to be in favour of impeaching Donald Trump [1] [2]. Although it is unlikely to happen before the midterm elections in November 2026, it could fuel the campaign for the re-election of the entre House of Representatives and a third of the Senators. Trump himself fears impeachment if the Democrats win a majority in the House, as he recently warned Conservative congressmen [3].

If anything, those who are willing should not simply impeach the president, but rather the system that made Agenda 2025 feasible. Even worse than Great Britain, which clings to centuries-old political traditions, the United States, which has no long history, clings to an electoral system that was developed under Wild West conditions and is clearly incapable of meeting today’s requirements. The election of an almost omnipotent president has led to increasingly wasteful campaigns between two not very different political camps, resulting in arbitrary outcomes of 49.9/50.1.

Any presidential system, or more generally any system centred around a leading figure, can only be maintained through the ongoing degradation of democracy. Living examples of this can be found in so-called democratic countries such as the United States, France, Italy, Great Britain, Germany, and the EU. In the course of de-democratisation, another foundation of the so-called liberal constitutional state is coming under pressure, namely the separation of powers, the famous checks and balances, that are respected even in a reputable company. Any all-powerful leader is tempted to curtail the power of competing institutions, Trump and Orbán are simply doing this more blatantly than their counterparts in other countries.

To create a more solid foundation for democracy, the USAs– and many other countries – should reform their constitution to make subsidiarity a core principle. This need not be too foreign to a federal political system such as that of the USA; it just needs to be taken seriously as a bottom-up approach, as opposed to what Trump is trying to impose on states and cities governed by Democrats. In a consistently thought-out bottom-up approach, local people would elect their local representatives, who in turn elect their representatives at the next higher level, and so forth. The national parliament then elects the members of the government, including the president.

This way, election campaigns become more affordable, the influence of billionaires is limited, while local people and their representatives gain in importance.
